How to Grow Your Freelance Business

Freelance ownership has grown exponentially since the COVID pandemic started in 2020. Working from home became the norm for millions.

As time went on during the pandemic, freelancers became more knowledgeable about how to go about building their freelance business. They discovered that taking a more strategic approach and having a constant commitment equals growth. You can’t treat it like a hobby, or you will get paid a hobby rate.

So, if you are ready to grow your freelance business, soak up these tips that can help you grow your business:

First niche down – find your community and know what problem your demographic needs to solve. Being a generalist will only keep you from finding what you like to do and enjoy. For example, if you LOVE social media, working in the social media niche would be an industry.

Once you find your niche, take the time to set goals. Set your 5-year goals first, then work backward until you know your monthly, weekly, and daily goals.

As a freelancer, providing high-quality services out of the gate is important. Look at your workflow and look at it from your demographics side. Work towards removing any cogs in the wheels for your service and improve it.

You are the driver behind your growth. You can say yes and no to gigs. Don’t get short-sighted. A repeat customer creates more revenue than getting new clients from every new assignment.

Appearing on more than one gig platform is important. It’s like the saying, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversification is a great way to create stability and ongoing cash flow for your freelancing business.

If you want to take your freelance business to the next level, work with a coach or a mentor who is where you want to be in your niche to help you develop yourself professionally.

Find ways to manage your time as your freelance business grows early in the journey. If you don’t, it will manage you. Seasoned freelancers understand the reality of project creep – not only is it a drain on your time and finances, but it’s also mentally exhausting when it consistently occurs. Burn-out will occur.

Another way to grow your business and get your name out there is to network!  Join a networking group, join a chamber of commerce and attend their networking events, network online – never underestimate the power of networking!
